In an article in today's Alton Telegraph, one of Madison County's senior judges commented on an accusation by a business lobbyist that the judges here lean more favorably toward the plaintiffs in class actions. In "Debate Renews in the Wake of Record Class Action Filings," by Sanford Schmidt, Judge Nicholas G. Bryon disagreed with this characterization about class actions. "I've dismissed more of them than I've ruled favorably on," Judge Byron said.
The article is recommended to anyone interested in the debate about tort "reform." Too frequently, big business lobbyists are not held accountable for twisting the facts about class actions. Judge Byron's comments are interesting indeed.
