From the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: "Illinois may take junk food out of school vending machines," by Georgina Gustin--
Starting next school year, vending machines in elementary and middle schools across Illinois could dispense a lot more good-for-you granola and a lot less sugar-filled soda.
A proposal under consideration by the Illinois State Board of Education could ban high-calorie, high-fat drinks and non-nutritious snacks during the school day and before school. If approved, the ban will make Illinois one of at least a dozen states to limit access to junk food and soda in schools, a trend supported by national and state health organizations concerned about growing obesity in children.
