Stock Market Regains Balance

From the Associated Press via Yahoo! News:  "Stocks Stabilize After Big Selloff," by Tim Paradis--

Stocks moved higher Wednesday after the previous session's 416-point plunge in the Dow industrials, as investors digested a barrage of economic data including a satisfactory gross domestic product report. A recovery in some markets following a worldwide selloff Tuesday lent some support to U.S stocks.

After a shaky start, the major indexes showed some resolve as the market sought to regain its footing after plummeting amid growing concerns about slowing economies in the U.S. and China. Investors were trying to digest a batch of economic data that came out in the opening minutes of trading.

Banning Cluster Bombs

From the Associated Press via Yahoo! News: "46 of 49 nations OK ban on cluster bombs," by Doug Mellgren--

Forty-six nations adopted a declaration Friday calling for a 2008 treaty banning cluster bombs, saying the weapons kill and maim long after conflicts end and inflict "unacceptable harm" on civilians, particularly children.

Some key arms makers — including the U.S., Russia, Israel and China — snubbed the conference of 49 nations. Of those attending, Poland, Romania and Japan did not approve the final text.

Britain and Iraq

From the Associated Press via Yahoo! News: "Blair announces Iraq withdrawal plan," by David Stringer--

Britain will withdraw around 1,600 troops from Iraq in the "coming months," aiming to cut its force to below 5,000 by late summer if Iraqi forces can secure the southern part of the country, Prime Minister Tony Blair said Wednesday.

British troops will stay in Iraq until at least 2008 and work to secure the Iran-Iraq border and maintain supply routes to U.S. and coalition troops in central Iraq, Blair told the House of Commons.

Steinbeck Books Big Sellers

From the Associated Press via Yahoo! News: "Steinbeck book auction nets $200,000"--

A rare edition of "The Grapes of Wrath," John Steinbeck's epic 1939 tale of Depression-era poverty, sold at auction for $47,800.

A number of other first-edition copies of Steinbeck works were sold Sunday at an auction held by Bonhams & Butterfields. A copy of "Of Mice and Men" sold for $7,768, "East of Eden" for $8,365 and "In Dubious Battle" for $11,353.

The books were owned by the author's sister, Elizabeth Steinbeck Ainsworth, who died in 1992. The Steinbeck family chose to sell the books to finance renovation of a Pacific Grove bungalow where Steinbeck wrote some of his books, said Catherine Williamson, director of fine books and manuscripts for Bonhams.

Peanut Butter Contamination

From the Associated Press via Yahoo! News: "CDC tracks peanut butter contamination," by Mike Stobbe--

Government scientists struggled Thursday to pinpoint the source of the first U.S. salmonella outbreak linked to peanut butter, the kid favorite packed into millions of lunchboxes every day.

Nearly 300 people in 39 states have fallen ill since August, and federal health investigators said they strongly suspect Peter Pan peanut butter and certain batches of Wal-Mart's Great Value house brand — both manufactured by ConAgra Foods Inc.

Computers Fooled by Congress?

From the Boston Globe via the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: "Daylight-saving Time: Computers could get out of sync," by Keith Reed--

Will your computer be ready when daylight-saving time comes?

In case you didn't know, that will happen several weeks earlier this year, thanks to congressional fiat.

And though "springing forward" in March instead of in April might not seem like a big deal, consider this: Every e-mail you send is stamped with the time it was sent, as are important transactions such as the automatic deposits you make to a savings account or payments you make online on a credit card balance.

Iran in Iraq?

From the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: "Gates: U.S. can prove Iran's Iraq role," by Lolita C. Baldor--

Serial numbers and markings on explosives used in Iraq provide "pretty good" evidence that Iran is providing either weapons or technology for militants there, Defense Secretary Robert Gates asserted Friday.

Offering some of the first public details of evidence the military has collected, Gates said, "I think there's some serial numbers, there may be some markings on some of the projectile fragments that we found," that point to Iran.

Iraq Vote Expected Next Week

From the Associated Press via Yahoo! News: "House schedules vote on Iraq resolution,"--

The Democratic-controlled House will vote next week on a nonbinding measure opposing President Bush's decision to dispatch more troops to Iraq, officials said Tuesday, in a wartime clash between Congress and commander in chief.

The precise nature of the measure remains to be determined, the officials said, although Brendan Daly, a spokeswoman for Speaker Nancy Pelosi (news, bio, voting record), said, it will be "our opposition to the surge" in troops.
